Stove Industry Alliance - Ecodesign ready Appliances
Ecodesign is the European-wide programme to lower emissions. It is due to come into force for stoves in the UK in 2022. SIA Ecodesign Ready stoves will meet the Ecodesign requirements and are available now. The PM emissions limit for Ecodesign is 55% lower than for DEFRA exempt stoves.
Burning wood produces particulate matter (PM) but the amount produced depends on how the wood is burnt. Independent research conducted by Kiwa Gastec on behalf of the SIA has shown that SIA Ecodesign Ready stoves can reduce particulate emissions by 90% compared to an open fire and 80% compared to an old stove (see the test results).
The idea of Ecodesign is to pick up where DEFRA left off – cleaner combustion and stricter regulations. Stoves will need to be more efficient, burning off excess, unwanted gases before they can reach the atmosphere.
As a result, the design of many future stoves will have to change, such as adapting the air controls and baffling, which may result in price increases on products. However, this will ensure a strict and high quality standard that will eliminate the cheaper, lower quality (and as a result often dangerous) stoves that are available from countries such as China.
With the Law taking effect in 2022. White Chapel Fireplaces aim is to sell Appliances that are approved and recommended through the Ecodesign scheme. Enabling homes to have safe and efficient appliances to take over into the 2022 law.
